Last Saturday, on the day Donald Trump became president of the United States, Jews were reading the Torah portion (Exodus 1:1-6:1) in which the tongue-tied shepherd Moshe receives instructions–and a promise–from the burning bush.

With You, In You

For LS

Remember the burning bush
remember the column of fire
remember the crimson tongues
that spoke to or through you
could not tell whose
voice told you precisely
what to do—where and how
to stand in the moment
you turned to face the flame
that would not quit.
You could not look
you covered your eyes,
but the soles of your feet,
skin to skin with the mountain, felt
the sap rising now in your veins
as it never had before.

This happened. This is
with you always.
Even in your mouth full of stones
this lives forever. You
have permission

to burn.

Friends, we have work to do. Remember the fire. It’s yours. Remember the One-Who-Is-Here Always. Even in your mouth full of stones.

See you in the streets.

Love and strength~
