Prodigal Daughter

When all else failed you came home
with nothing to show for your time
no PhD no published book
nothing in your hands at all
nothing on your back
nothing up your sleeve
nothing to show but your face
broken and beautiful (some whispered)
cracked with light.

She gave a banquet in your honor.
You tried to say, It was just, just that—
but she wouldn’t let you explain
Your face! Your face! she said
and treated you as if you were holy.

Which is how you have felt about her.

Nothing in your life is what you expect.
You scoured the world for praise
and find yourself celebrated here
for nothing at all but your face.
